ADVANCING THE CAUSE OF REFLECTIVE DEMOCRACY

The Campaign funds activism and research accelerating fair political representation for all Americans, with a focus on projects and leaders poised to have real-time impact just when it matters most.

  • Reflective Democracy Innovator Jessica Byrd leveraged our support to launch the Electoral Justice Project at the Movement for Black Lives, bringing to elections and civic engagement “the clarity and radical vision that many of us have brought to the protest lines.” In the aftermath of the 2016 election, our flexible grant-making strategy helped the Movement for Black Lives and Black Lives Matter become highly visible gatekeepers credited with helping enable the victories of Ayanna Pressley, Wesley Bell, and other progressive African American leaders.
  • During the dramatic protests at Standing Rock, we invested in Chrissie Castro’s mission to redress the severe underrepresentation of Native Americans in politics. With financial and technical support from the Campaign, Chrissie launched Advance Native Political Leadership (ANPL), the only national group tackling the urgent need for more Native candidates and elected leaders. In 2018, Native candidates including Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland are poised for election to Congress.

In partnership with our nonprofit grantee-partners, media experts, and other resources, the Campaign’s innovative initiatives create pathways into the political system for women and people of color.

  • The Gatekeeper Organizing Project focuses on how political gatekeepers shape the candidate pipeline. Long before voters go to the polls, party officials and major donors select and reject candidates, often giving white males preferential treatment based on outdated assumptions about what voters want. From collecting new data to mobilizing community leaders, we’re transforming how gatekeepers do their job, so that voters can elect more candidates who reflect today’s America.
  • Systemic Civic Leadership Development aims to empower communities by offering comprehensive civic leadership training to local leaders. Our vision is to fine-tune the training typically offered to aspiring political candidates, then radically expand access to it, so that activists, nonprofit leaders, future campaign staffers – even elected officials –get the tools they need to boost the political influence and power of their communities.
